Warnings

3:40 PM NST Saturday 16 December 2017
Blizzard warning in effect for:

  • Avalon Peninsula Southwest

Total snowfall 30 to 40 cm expected.

Snow, heavy at times, will continue this evening, with strengthening winds. Strong northeasterlies will shift to very strong northwesterlies, with gusts reaching 120 km/h along parts of the coast. The combination of fresh snowfall and strong winds will result in blowing snow and near zero visibilities.

Conditions are forecast to begin improving around midnight as the snow tapers off with diminishing winds.

Travel is expected to be extremely hazardous due to reduced visibility. Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve.

Blizzard warnings are issued when widespread reduced visibilities of 400 metres or less are expected for at least 4 hours.
